You accumulate body fat from the extra food you have eaten which has not been burnt for energy. We actually need about 5% fat in our body for certain functions but any more just is extra weight which makes our muscles and heart work harder. You have to burn approximately 3.500 calories to lose 1 pound of fat. Body fat provides us with little nutritional benefit unlike muscle which transports nutrients around our body. So, if you want to lose weight, think about losing fat and retaining muscle.

The density of muscle is greater than that of fat. If you compare a pound of body fat with a pound of muscle, you will see that the fat is much larger, typically about 20% greater. So when you lose fat your body size will become noticeably smaller.

Your BMI is a useful measurement for determining your correct weight for height but has many limitations and should be used with other measurements to get an overall picture. For example, body builders have been seen to have BMIs of 35 and upwards which would indicate obesity when clearly they are not.
Believe it or not, most people are overweight and many of those are becoming obese. When we lose weight we need to know if the loss from body fat, muscle or water. If we lose body fat as opposed to muscle and water, our bodies become healthier and more efficient as a result.
What % body fat do you think is considered as healthy? 10%, 25%, 40%? What is considered healthy depends on age and gender because as we get older our metabolic rate slows and we accumulate more fat. Some slim people would appear to have low body fat levels. Having tested groups of thin people, we discovered some of them had excessively high body fat levels. When asked t about their lifestyle, those with high levels told us they did very little or no physical exercise at all.
Many go to the gym and complain saying "I haven´t lost much weight". When we tested them, we found that they had increased muscle. This was because the density of muscle is greater than than body fat meaning the weight change was small but overall their body composition had improved.
